The University Hospital Bonn (UKB) is a maximum-care hospital with more than 1,306 planned beds. The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Bonn, Medical School, is looking for a

PhD student (m/f/d) in the Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Neuroretinal Imaging Research Unit

 

It’s a part-time postition (50%).

The position is timly limited to 3 years to obtain the doctors degree.

 

The position will be supervised jointly with Population Health Sciences at the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE; principal investigator Prof. Dr. Dr. Monique Breteler) and work as part of a team conducting the ophthalmic part of a large population study implemented by the DZNE, the Rhineland Study (www.rheinlandstudie.de). The main focus of the ophthalmic part of the Rhineland Study lies on very detailed phenotyping (i.e. deep phenotyping) of retinal ageing, preclinical changes and disease, as well as the comprehensive assessment of risk factors for onset and progression of preclinical and clinical disease. Risk factors assessed will include both genetic and environmental factors. The main interest of the research group is in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the main causes for visual impairment in Germany.

The PhD thesis will focus on the relationship between ageing and AMD and encompass the full breadth of scientific work.

 

Your tasks:

  • Scientific coordination and implementation of the ophthalmic study protocol
  • Organization and supervision of study assistants and data collection
  • Regular reporting, data analysis and quality management
  • Preparation of scientific publications
  • Communication and regular exchange with international research institutions

Anforderungen

Your profile:

  • Completed university studies in the field of medicine, epidemiology, health sciences or equal qualification
  • Diploma or Master's degree qualifying for a doctorate
  • Experience in clinical or epidemiological research is an advantage
  • Work experience in ophthalmology, optometry, optics or orthoptics is desirable but not mandatory
